Assistant Professor - NEST

United Kingdom

David is a health systems researcher with over ten years’ experience working within the field of health systems and services evaluation in the Kenyan health system as an epidemiologist. Prior to joining LSHTM in 2020, he worked with KEMRI Wellcome Trust Research Programme where he led work on nursing services research aimed at understanding the role of nurses in the delivery of quality care and the implications of the nursing workforce deficit on the care provided. He also co-led the ‘Health Services that Deliver for Newborns’ (HSD-N) programme of work whose focus is understanding the burden, need and access of newborn care services as well as evaluating the quality of newborn care services.

Research

Over, the last 10 years, David’s research work has spanned i) development of routine data capture methods, ii) evaluation of clinical and nursing quality of care within hospitals, iii) development of metrics for nursing quality of care, iv) set-up and data management for pragmatic clinical trials, v) exploration of the application of various statistical methods (propensity score analysis, multi-level models and statistical process control) to routine data and vi) evaluation of multifaced complex interventions using multiple and/or mixed methods.

He has broad interests’ in the use of quantitative and qualitative methods in identify quality of care gaps, development of routine data capture methods and the use of this data for effective decision making although with a bias on how human resources for health more specifically the nursing workforce influences the quality of care provided. His future work aims at developing human resource interventions as well as optimising approaches for nursing care provision.

Within LSHTM, David is part of the NEST360 team and will be focusing on generating evidence for interventions required for small and sick newborns using a health systems approach.
