Jan van der Meulen is Professor of Clinical Epidemiology, Department of Health Services Research and Policy, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He studied medicine and completed a PhD in medical physics in 1989. He has worked as a clinical epidemiologist first in the Netherlands and since 1998 in the UK (MRC Unit Southampton 1998 – 2000; LSHTM 2000 – present).

He was Director of the Clinical Effectiveness Unit, the academic collaboration between the LSHTM and the Royal College of Surgeons of England, between 2001 and 2011 and Honorary Director of the Office for Research and Clinical Audit, Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists between 2006 and 2014. He was Head of the Department of Health Services Research and Policy, LSHTM, between 2011 and 2014. He chaired the NIHR Research for Patient Benefit Funding Committee for the London Region between 2011 and 2014.

He is Chair of the Project Teams of the National Prostate Cancer Audit and the National Maternity and Perinatal Audit and senior methodologist for the National Bowel Cancer Audit.

His main fields of interest are the application of epidemiological, statistical, and decision-analytical techniques to study effectiveness and quality of care in the areas of surgery, cancer, obstetrics and gynaecology, using electronic health records. He is included as an epidemiologist in the GMC Specialist Register since 2002 and is a Fellow of the FPH, the RCOG and the RCS.
