Adolescents theme

Emma Singer
Emma Singer

I'm studying an MSc in Public Health.  I'm from the US, where I just finished my undergraduate degree in Global Public Health with a minor in Data Science at the University of Virginia. During my undergraduate degree, I worked on controlled medicines research, sparking my interest in substance use. I'm especially interested in norms surrounding substance use in adolescents.

I'm really interested in MARCH's work on adolescent risk behaviors and schools-based interventions. I hope to learn more about the development, implementation, and evaluation of these interventions, especially how stakeholders are engaged in the process.

I am on the MSc Nutrition for Global Health course. I have come to LSHTM straight from my undergraduate at the University of Brighton where I studied Sport and Exercise Science. Throughout my undergraduate studies I worked with the Lawn Tennis Association on a variety of participation projects to promote youth engagement in sport on a national level. I am really looking forward to applying my human physiology, psychology and nutrition knowledge from my undergraduate on a global-scale to tackle the health challenges faced by mothers, children and adolescents, and be at the forefront of positive change in these areas. Outside of my studies I love playing tennis (although I will try any sport!) and running in the countryside.

I am particularly interested in developing my knowledge around child and adolescent health with a focus on the role nutrition and the impact malnutrition has on physical and cognitive development. Children and adolescents are vastly under-researched in global health and I am looking forward to working within the centre to propel the vision of raising awareness of the fundamental research regarding the contemporary challenges faced by young people.

Cara Lynn Kim
Cara Kim

I am currently studying for an MSc in Public Health at LSHTM. I recently graduated from medical school in Munich, Germany and will start my specialty training in paediatrics after the year in London. I am very interested in neonatology, infectious diseases and generally how we can improve healthcare systems across the world to achieve better health outcomes, particularly for children.

As an SLO at MARCH, I am excited to work on the B-Theme, collaborate with researchers in this field, help promote their work to a wider audience, and thereby connect and engage the student body at LSHTM with the impactful research that is happening at the Centre.

I am a Brazilian-American MSc Public Health student at LSHTM, with a background in psychology and public health. As a member of the Child theme in MARCH, I bring diverse experience from my volunteer work in labour and delivery and children鈥檚 sectors in hospitals, Zika research in Recife, Brazil, and at LSHTM, serving as a pediatric medical assistant in Washington, D.C., and interning at a women鈥檚 mental health charity in London. My career interests focus on maternal and child health, particularly fieldwork research in Brazil and women鈥檚 health services and advocacy. I am grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with MARCH's dedicated SLOs, members, and public health professionals and look forward to contributing to the organisation鈥檚 impactful work.

I am a paediatric medical officer from Cape Town, South Africa who is passionate about advocacy and improving equity in child health, particularly in the Global South. I鈥檓 currently pursuing the MSc in Tropical Medicine and International Health on a Chevening scholarship. I look forward to exploring the intersection between child health, infectious disease and global health interventions. As an SLO for the Child Theme, I aim to engage with the LSHTM student body and encourage collaboration with the MARCH Centre to promote research into pertinent child health topics. I am excited for the year ahead and am eager to foster new networks and partnerships!

Climate theme

Noemi Maria Felisi
Noemi Felisi

I am an Italian medical doctor, currently pursuing an intensive Master's in Public Health for Development. I did my clinical internships in Milan and Paris, in the departments of gynaecology and infectious diseases, and I recently completed a semester of clinical and research work in a facility in Northern Uganda. In the future, I see myself working in the management and implementation of health projects in low- and middle-income countries.

I have always been passionate in women's health. During my time in Uganda working in gynaecology and HIV wards, and conducting a research project about cervical cancer, I saw firsthand how intersected factors reduce women鈥檚 well-being and severely limit their access to healthcare. This experience has strengthened my desire to focus on this field, and given the growing impact of climate change on our health, I'm particularly interested in exploring how it affects mothers and children's health. I have noticed that LSHTM has great projects in this area, and I would love to get involved with the student and researcher community, especially by helping create communication materials and organising events around these topics.

Isabel Metcalf

I am a MSc Public Health student. I have previously worked as a research assistant exploring the relationship between physical activity, mental wellbeing and cognition in adolescents as well as changes in cognition across the menstrual cycle in women. I am excited to contribute to the research around climate and planetary health at the MARCH centre.

Armaan Ujra (MBChB, DipHIVMan)
Armaan Ujra

I have a combined passion for child health and health systems strengthening, with over 6 years of clinical and research implementation experience. As a student at LSHTM, I am currently pursuing postgraduate studies in Climate Change and Planetary Health. I envision a world in which children benefit from the burgeoning field of Planetary Health, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.

In my previous roles at Wits RHI, I advised on and led strategies in paediatric HIV management, focused on implementing interventions at scale, and collaborated with (inter)national stakeholders to improve the quality of HIV-related interventions in South Africa. I am enthusiastic about healthcare education and capacitation, and have participated in the content development and execution of HIV-related training for healthcare workers, healthcare managers and undergraduate students.

I'm a British-German distance learning student for the MSc in Epidemiology at LSHTM. My academic background is in international crisis and disaster management, with a focus on global health. Professionally, I work as a Research Associate and Communications Assistant for a company focused on health and sustainability. My passions are maternal, sexual and reproductive health (also perinatal epidemiology!), and I spend my free time volunteering for a local AIDS-Foundation.

As an SLO, I am looking forward to bringing distance learning students closer to the MARCH centre and I can鈥檛 wait for all we achieve in 2025!
