£1.4m award to accelerate vaccine development for protection against foodborne bacteria

Researchers at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the MRC Unit The Gambia have been awarded £1.4 million to conduct research that will enable the development of vaccines against Campylobacter.

Campylobacter is a foodborne bacteria responsible for one-fourth of diarrheal diseases worldwide. It is especially dangerous to children, the elderly, and the immunocompromised. The project will involve sampling Campylobacter genomes from around the globe to identify infection sources in people. The findings will help create vaccines aimed at controlling the disease in animals, such as poultry, ultimately reducing the spread of infections to humans.
